Peer Research - State of the Region

Updated: 17 hours ago

Overview of work:

In 2021, a group of Peer Researcher supported by the Youth Work Unit Y&H and, the University of Hull, over a period of 4 months, created a report on the State of the Region’s Youth Work, focusing on four areas the peer researchers were interested in, the report looks at:

  • Youth voice and attitudes towards young people - Will Solomon,

  • Enrichment and open access provision - Mitchell Winter

  • Youth Opportunities and employment - Jude Daniel Smith

  • SEND Youth Provision - access all areas - Reese Spanton

The peer researchers were supported by the University of Hull to develop their knowledge and skills in research. Each young person adopted a different research approach, reflecting their different areas of interest.  Reese for example, used desktop research to create a comparison table of local SEND offers, identifying gaps in provision, information and scoring them on ease of access and navigation.

While Jude, interviewed young people and employers to understand their experience of job hunting and employing young people.  Mitchell drew on is own, his wider families, peers and youth workers experience of attending and or providing youth provision, to assess the impact and need of open access youth provision for young people today, having experienced its shrinkage.   Will reviewed youth voice theories and practice, interviewed both young people, decision makers and youth voice practitioners to understand their experience and why participation remains a corner stone of youth work practice.
